Default Onkyo TXSR806

Hi,

Richersounds are currently offering the Onkyo TXSR806 for £399, seems a
really good deal to me.

http://www.richersounds.com/showprod...KY-TXSR806-SIL

Does anyone have any positive or negative things to say about this bit of
kit, especially at this price?

If you do not feel confident buy the RS warranty, cheap, and if no claim
you get the cost back.

I find RS and really good place to deal with.

That sounds quite a bargain. I bought an Onkyo TXSR606 a few months ago for a
little more than that (allowing for how far the pound has fallen versus the
Euro) & have been really delighted with it.

The Onkyo TXSR606 is similar to the model on sale at Richer Sounds but a bit
lower powered & with a few less inputs. The thing that amazed me with this
amplifier is how much clearer & distinct each channel is now in comparison with
the pretty decent Yamaha receiver that I used before. I have now add a cheap
JBL sub-woofer which has brought the whole sound experience up to a new level.
Much appreciated to is the little microphone that is used to automatically set
up the levels for the speakers.

I would thoroughly recommend the Onkyo TXSR606 & by extension the Onkyo TXSR806
as it is basically an up rated version of the same amplifier. At that price
grab it!.

Thanks for that, really tempted.
Can you tell me what the upscaling is like, as I'm really after a 1 wire
(hdmi) to tv solution. Much easier for the children and less remote
fiddling.
Also read about a blue dots on black problem when running in 1080p through
mode.

Yes, have been buying from RS for more years than I can remember and they
have never been a problem.

I haven't really thought about the upscaling but one reason for me getting the
Onkyo was to simplify the wiring. All the viewing is done through a Panasonic
PT-AE700 HD projector onto a 10' screen so any sub-par video material is
immediately noticeable. Apart from some low bit rate DivX files that would look
crap on any screen the picture quality is really excellent.

The inputs are a Humax Freesat HDR (previously a Sky HD digibox) & an HTPC both
connected via HDMI & with an extra coaxial connection for digital audio from
the PC. I previously used a HDMI switch box for the video & a Yamaha RX-V550
for the audio. The new amplifier has simplified this no end. In addition while
the Yamaha is a perfectly decent budget amplifier the Onkyo is noticeably
clearer & delivers a more precise sound stage. Sorry for the
pseudo-intellectual What HiFi style review but it really does sound much better
& my wife even commented on the improvement without my prompting. We have a big
living room (40 sq. m.) & on some material I have had to crank the volume up
near maximum which it does OK without distortion but the extra 40W/channel of
the TXSR806 would be welcome occasionally.

I don't have a Bluray player but have played some 1080p rips through the
projector which is in any case only 1366x768 but I have certainly not seen any
blue dots on black problem. I wish that you hadn't told me about that as now
that I know about it I will be looking for it all the time now:-)

Oops ... sorry for ruining your viewing experience, didn't mean it .
Chances are that you won't have the 'blue dots on black' problem, so just
carry on enjoying your purchase.

I have just bitten the bullet and ordered an 806. Since this is a major
purchase for me, I just wanted to know as much as possible about it. I have
mainly analogue sources currently (hence the query about upscaling) and will
slowly upgrade to hdmi. This seems to be the perfect solution for me in my 1
wire and HD quest.

So thanks and will report back to you once I have it set up.

PS.

And 'pseudo-intellectual What HiFi style' talk is fine by me, I have been
reading that sort of stuff for years.

Mine arrived yesterday. Very impressive piece of kit. I have found the following places of help:-

http://www.avforums.com/forums/onkyo...rs-thread.html

and this second one has an FAQ for the 705. I know that its a different model but a lot of the
functiones etc are the same so may be of use

The 806 is my first amp, so i'm new to all of this. Luckily i've managed to get hold of a quick
setup guide, so that should get me up and running quickly. I will then have to figure out all the
other settings connections etc.

The setup is made very simple by the use of the supplied microphone to get the
speaker levels correct. Other than that there is little to do once you have
sorted out the inputs. In use it's just a question of selecting the input &
enjoying the audio/video. The dozens of different sound effects (Concert Hall
etc) soon lose their novelty value.
