Default Which DVD format is best for recording

Forgetting about HD and bluray, which recordable DVD format is the
best?

The reason I ask is I was backing up some old tapes onto DVD for my
brother, and he gave me a spindle of DVD+R discs. Previously I have
used only DVD-R discs for recordings that I want to write once and
finalise into DVD-Video, and DVD-RAM for timeshifting before we got a
PVR.

Is one of the +R or -R better for any reason, or are they
interchangeable?

Apologies for my ignorance!

They aren't interchangeble as a matter of course but most machines these
days seem to be able to cope with playback from both formats. Many also,
these days will record to either format. If you really want to know the
difference between them then head over to Wikipedia where there is a nice
easy explanation ..... as well as an horredously complex technical
explanation. I don't think one format is considered better than the other -
they are simply different.
