Default Which DVD format is best for recording

Forgetting about HD and bluray, which recordable DVD format is the
best?

The reason I ask is I was backing up some old tapes onto DVD for my
brother, and he gave me a spindle of DVD+R discs. Previously I have
used only DVD-R discs for recordings that I want to write once and
finalise into DVD-Video, and DVD-RAM for timeshifting before we got a
PVR.

Is one of the +R or -R better for any reason, or are they
interchangeable?

Apologies for my ignorance!

I record to DVD+RW as that's what my Philips recorder will take (as
well as +R but these are discs I want to reuse) and after I've made a
DVD on my PC I record it to DVD-R (Datawrite Yellow top) as -R, last
time I checked, tended to be cheaper than +R, although prices have
crumbled since I started buying blank DVDs so I'd have to check to see
what the difference is now, but I'll just stick with what I know
works.

I get mine from www.digitalpromo.co.uk
